While Activation Lock is meant to protect the data on your iPad from unauthorized access, it can also keep you locked out of your own device.
This can happen if you forget the Apple ID and password associated with the iPad or if you purchased a second-hand iPad that is still connected to the previous owner’s iCloud account.
Either one of these situations can be remedied in various ways, depending on your current situation. Let’s look at these solutions in greater detail.
What is Activation Lock?
Before we look at how you can remove the activation lock on your iPad, it is important to first understand exactly what Activation Lock is.
When you first activate an iOS device, Apple will take note of the device’s unique identifier and associate it with your Apple ID.
This essentially prevents other devices from using your Apple ID. Without this Apple ID and its password, the iPad cannot be reset or activated.
You are unlikely to notice that this Activation Lock is there until the first time you reset your iPhone or update the iOS.
This is because Apple will require you to sign in with your Apple ID to activate the device after it restarts.
Activation Lock is related to Find my iPhone, an Apple feature that can help you locate a lost device.
When you enable Find my iPhone, you also automatically enable Activation Lock. To find out if Find my iPhone is enabled on your device, go to Setting > [Your Name] > iCloud > Find My iPhone.
How to Remove Activation Lock on iPad without Apple ID and Password
If you find yourself unable to get past the Activation Lock screen on your iPad, the following are the solutions to try:
Quick Way: Use iCloud Activation Lock Removal Tool
Using Unlockit is your best option if you don’t know the Apple ID and password needed to get past the Activation Lock Screen.
This solution is specifically designed for this purpose and therefore the best solution if you purchased a locked second-hand iPad.
Unlockit has numerous features aimed at making the process as easy and as effective as possible. These features include the following:
- It is very easy to use with a simple user interface that allows you to unlock the device in minutes.
- It supports all iPad models and all versions of the iPadOS
- Once the iPad is unlocked, you will be able to access all features in the device except calls, cellular functions, and iCloud.
- The old iCloud account will no longer be used to track, access, or erase the iPad remotely.
Here’s how you can use Unlockit to remove Activation Lock on your iPad:
Step 1: Open Unlockit on your computer and choose “Remove iCloud Activation Lock.” Click “Start” and then connect the iPad to the computer using a lightning cable.
Step 2: You will need to jailbreak the device to unlock it. Unlockit provides you with the jailbreak package needed to do the job: just click on “Jailbreak” to download it.
Once the package has been downloaded, click on “Jailbreak” and put the iPad in DFU mode.
Step 3: After successfully jailbreaking the device, click on “Remove” to begin unlocking the device. The program will notify you when the process is complete.
Ask Apple to Remove Activation Lock for Your iPad
If you are still unable to activate the device, you can contact Apple for assistance. Apple can remove Activation Lock from the iPad, as long as you can provide proof of purchase. You can seek Apple’s help in one of two ways:
- Make an appointment at your local Apple Store and be sure to bring your proof of purchase.
- Call Apple Support and explain the situation. They may remove the Activation Lock remotely, but they may request additional information before they can do that.
Apple confirms that removing Activation Lock falls under “the sphere of free services” and you, therefore, won’t need Apple Care.
They however warned that there is a good chance your device will be erased during this process.
Not all devices were erased, but you will have to sign a waiver before they can unlock the device, just in case.
Ask the Previous Owner to Disable Activation Lock Remotely
If you purchased a second-hand iPad and you can communicate with the previous owner, they may be able to help you unlock it.
All they’d have to do is remove the iPad from their iCloud account, something they can do remotely using these steps:
Step 1: Go to https://www.icloud.com/find and log in with their Apple ID and password.
Step 2: They then click “All Devices” and select the iPad.
Step 3: Click “Remove from Account” if it is available. If not, they can click “Erase iPad” and then “Remove from Account.”
Once this is done, the iPad will no longer be connected to their Apple ID, freeing you to activate and set it up.
You can use the DNS Bypass method to unlock the iPad. There are a few things to note about using this method, including:
- It is completely free to use
- It is quick and easy since you don’t need a third-party tool or a computer
- It will unlock the device, but some features such as calls will be limited
- You need Wi-Fi connectivity
- It is a temporary solution since the Activation Lock Screen may easily reappear
- It works only on devices running iOS 8 to iOS 10
This is a temporary fix and you may find that you have to repeat the process every time you reboot the iPhone.
If you find that you are stuck in the Activation Screen on your iPad because you don’t know the Apple ID, the solutions above should be able to help.
If there is simply no way to find the Apple ID associated with the device, Unlockit presents the best solution.
This is because it is easy to use, unlocks the device in minutes and doesn’t require that you communicate with anyone else to unlock the device.
