Ordinarily, turning off your iPhone XR is a very simple process: you just need to press and hold the Side button and the Volume Up or Down button and then drag the slider to the right to turn off the device.

But in some rare cases, the device just won’t turn off, failing to respond to the combination of buttons and therefore not turning off as you would expect it to.

Sometimes the “Power Off” slider doesn’t appear at all even when you press the correct combination of buttons and you know that these buttons work as they should.

This is often considered some kind of iOS stuck situation, meaning that you can easily fix it using some of the solutions that we will be looking at here.

These solutions can help resolve a software problem that could be affecting the device, allowing you to turn it off normally.

But before we show you the solutions, let's find out some of the common causes of this issue:

Why Your iPhone XR Won’t Turn Off

When your iPhone XR will not turn off even though you are pressing the correct buttons, the following are some of the things to look at:

  • Software problems. This is particularly true if the problem arose soon after an iOS update
  • There are some users who complain that their iPhone XR doesn’t turn off or even open any apps. When they try to open the app, nothing happens and when they attempt a soft reset, the device vibrates, but they don’t see the “Power Off” slider: the screen remains on until the device goes into sleep mode.
  • The iPhone screen can also become unresponsive to touch, making it difficult to drag the “Power Off” slider to turn off the device.
  • Users may also find it difficult to turn off the device if the Home Button and the Volume buttons don’t work.

How to Fix iPhone XR Not Turning Off Issue

The following are some of the solutions you should try if you are unable to turn off your iPhone XR:

Turn iPhone XR Off From Settings

If you are unable to turn off the iPhone XR because the Volume or Side buttons are broken or not working, you might be able to turn off the device using the Settings App.

This will however be only possible if the screen is responsive and you can access the Settings app on your iPhone.

Here’s how to use the Settings App to turn off the iPhone:

  • Step 1: Open the Settings App on your iPhone XR.
  • Step 2: Tap on “General”.
  • Step 3: Scroll down to tap on “Shut Down” and the shutdown process will begin immediately.

Or Restart Your iPhone XR From Assistive Touch

This is another good way to restart the device when the physical buttons will not work.

You can tap to open Assistive Touch if it is not on the screen and then go to Device > More > Restart

If you don’t see the Assistive Touch button on the screen, then it means that it not enabled.

You can enable it easily in the settings, just go to Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Assistive Touch and then tap “Customize Top Level Menu” and add “Restart Option” from the list.

Force Restart Your iPhone XR If You Are Still Unable to Turn It Off

If all your physical buttons are working just fine, but you still find that you are unable to turn off or restart the iPhone, this could signal a deeper software issue.

It often means that the physical buttons are unable to trigger the settings to turn off the device, meaning that there is an error in the iOS systems responsible for this connection.

One of the easiest ways that you can fix this issue is to hard reset the iPhone. A hard reset is useful since it will easily remove any random bugs and errors that could be causing the problem.

Force restarting your iPhone is very simple: just follow these steps:

  • Step 1: Press and release the Volume Up Button.
  • Step 2: Press and release the Volume Down Button.
  • Step 3: Then, press and hold the Power button until the Apple Logo appears on the screen.

Restore iPhone XR in Recovery Mode

But as useful as a hard reset can be, it may not be able to eliminate all of the system errors that may be affecting the device.

So, if even after a hard reset you still find that you are unable to restart the iPhone, it is time to consider a more invasive solution.

One way to effectively remove all types of system errors from your iPhone XR is to restore the device in recovery mode.

This is an ideal way to restore the device in iTunes even when iTunes doesn’t recognize the device as it allows you to bypass the device’s operating system.

This process is simple, although you may end up losing some of the data that was not included in a backup.

Before you follow the steps below to restore your iPhone XR in recovery mode, we recommend backing up all the data on your device if you can.

Step 1: Begin by connecting the iPhone XR to your computer and open iTunes (For PC) or Finder (macOS Catalina 10.15 or later).

Step 2: With the device connected to the computer, use this procedure to put it in recovery mode:

  • Press and then quickly release the Volume Up Button
  • Press and then quickly release the Volume Down Button
  • Then press and hold the Side/Power button until the recovery mode screen (Connect to iTunes) appears on the screen. Do not release the Side button even after you see the Apple Logo on the screen.

Step 3: iTunes or Finder will detect the device in recovery mode and you will see a dialog box asking you to “Restore” or “Update” the connected device.

Begin by choosing “Update.” But if it doesn’t work, you can choose “Restore” which will erase all the data on your device.

When the process is complete, you will be able to setup the device as new.

The computer will download the latest version of iOS and install it on your device. This process should ordinarily take about 15 minutes.

If it takes more than 15 minutes, the device will exit recovery mode and you will have to start over.

Apply TinyFix iOS System Repair to Fix Potential System Issue

While restoring your iPhone XR in recovery mode will most certainly clear any software issues that could be causing this problem, there is a very considerable chance that you will lose the data on your device in the process.

If you don’t have a backup, or you don’t particularly like the idea of losing all your data, we recommend considering TinyFix iOS System Repair.

There are a lot of reasons why your iPhone XR may not be turning off.

If the issue is caused by a software problem (if the physical buttons work just fine), you can try to hard reset the device, restore it in iTunes or use TinyFix iOS System Repair Software to fix the problem.

But if you had dropped your device or you suspect that there may be something wrong with the buttons, we don’t recommend attempting to fix the problem yourself.

Instead, contact Apple Support or make an appointment at your local Apple store to get the device repaired by a professional.
