Now that we've gone through all the reasons why it happened let's figure out how to recover your credentials. It's a straightforward process; all you have to do is:
Step 1. Head over to the Apple ID account that can be found at iforgot.apple.com.
Step 2. Once there, you'd notice a forgotten password link. Go ahead and click on Reset Password.
